Author L. Frank Baum is most often remembered for his book The Wizard of Oz, but he also wrote many other fairy tales and shorter stories. He learned about gophers and other prairie animals when he lived in Aberdeen, South Dakota, in the late 1880s. Carolyn Digby Conahan is the staff artist for Cricket magazine.
