Also known as Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, Zitkala-Ša was born on the Yankton Sioux Indian Reservation in 1876.

Award-winning Lakota artist S. D. Nelson has painted dramatic illustrations to showcase the story.  Nelson, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is author and illustrator of other award-winning children’s books, including Crazy Horse’s Vision and Jim Thorpe’s Bright Path.
